Bowmont Herefords’ 15th annual on-property sale at Tatyoon on Monday was hotly contested. A significant lift in prices from last year saw prices peak at $17,500 and average $7400.

The sale’s average was more than $2200 up on the 2015 result, which stud principal Sam King said was thanks to the current strength of cattle prices.

Forty-five registered buyers filled the sale barn stands from Victoria and NSW and there were phone bids from Queensland.

Gunyah Herefords, Cooma NSW, paid the sale’s top price of $17,000 for Lot 17, a two year-old Bowmont G085 Dom Lad K056.

This 862kg bull, with a scrotal measurement of 42cm was by Bowmont Dom Lad G085 out of Bowmont Martina D077.

His estimated breeding values (EBVs) are +4.7 for birth weight, +74 600-day weight, +3.4 eye muscle area (EMA) and +1.2 intramuscular fat (IMF).

Robert Hain, Gunyah Herefords, is a repeat buyer at Bowmont. He also purchased Lot 7 for $10,000.

“I was after bulls with extra growth and volume, structurally correct and free moving. I came to look at the Bowmont Dom Lad G085 calves and they didn’t disappoint,” Mr Hain said.

Lot 34, Bowmont Eclipse K016, son of Allandale Collingwood G20 and Bowmont Queen H021 excited buyers and sold to the sale’s second top price of $16,000.

Talbalba Herefords, Millmerran, Qld, had the final bid on this Eclipse calf with EBVs including +7.1 BW, +90 600-day weight, +3.7 EMA and +0.3 IMF.

Bowmont’s Sam King said they were “...rapt with the way the day has gone, good to see so many repeat clients, but also new ones.”

“I think this is a positive reflection of the beef industry and the direction that it is heading.”

Selling agent Michael Glasser, GTSM, said its was a “wonderful result” for the Bowmont team, with a strong sale reflecting the depth of quality of the bulls offered.
